How Cold Is Too Cold for a Whippet?

Whippet Clothes Guide › How Cold Is Too Cold for a Whippet?

From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: a Whippet feels cool weather sooner than most dogs, so plan on a bodysuit for every chilly walk, and once it is below freezing, a winter-weight bodysuit that blocks wind and covers the head as well as the legs. Wind, wet weather and standing still all make it feel colder, so watch your own dog as well as the thermometer.

Reading the table

  • Cool, damp fall and spring days: the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit is a midweight fleece that resists wind and rain. Where winters are mild it works all winter.
  • Cold, windy winter walks: Heavy Fleece Bodysuits are thick, warm fleece that cover the full body, chest and legs.
  • Into the 20s with wind and snow: Windblock fleece is 3 layers thick, wind-blocking and water-repellent.
  • Below 35°F: the Extra Heavy Fleece Hooded Bodysuit is a very thick velour fleece that resists wind and repels snow.
  • From 25°F down to 10°F: the Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Hooded Bodysuit is so thick it feels like a jacket in the shape of a bodysuit.

What makes it feel colder

  • Wind. A windy day feels much colder than a calm one at the same temperature. Windblock fleece has a polyurethane layer between two fleeces that blocks wind and snow.
  • Rain, snow and slush. A wet dog loses heat fast. The outer Windblock fleece is treated to repel water and stains.
  • Standing still. Waiting at a crosswalk chills a dog faster than a brisk walk.
  • Bare legs. Long Whippet legs lose heat quickly, which is why we always recommend a four-leg bodysuit over a coat or sweater.

Don’t overheat indoors

Heavy Fleece, Windblock and Extra Heavy bodysuits are made for outside. Take them off when you come in. For a cool house, choose Jammies for sleeping and lounging, or the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit, which is made to be worn inside as well as out. For air-conditioning, choose Rompers, a stretch cotton bodysuit.

Frequently asked questions

What should a Whippet wear below freezing?

Choose a winter-weight four-leg bodysuit. Windblock Fleece Hooded Bodysuits are made for 32°F to 20°F, Extra Heavy Fleece Hooded Bodysuits for below 35°F, and Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Hooded Bodysuits for 25°F down to 10°F.

Can my Whippet wear a winter bodysuit indoors?

No. Heavy Fleece, Windblock and Extra Heavy fleece are for outside wear only. Indoors, choose Jammies, a Romper or the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit.

Is a sweater warm enough for a Whippet in winter?

We recommend a bodysuit instead. A sweater covers the chest and front legs; a four-leg bodysuit also covers the belly and back legs, where a Whippet loses heat.
