The Best Winter Coat for a Whippet: How to Choose

Whippet Clothes Guide › The Best Winter Coat for a Whippet: How to Choose

From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: the best winter “coat” for a Whippet is a four-leg bodysuit. It covers the chest, belly and all four legs, is cut for the breed’s deep chest, high tuck and long legs, and comes in a fabric matched to your winter. For most cold winters that means a Heavy Fleece or Windblock bodysuit; below 35°F, an Extra Heavy one.

What to look for

  1. Full coverage. Chest, belly and legs, not just the back. Covering the legs is what keeps a Whippet much warmer.
  2. Breed-specific fit. Sized by length, chest and height for Whippets, so it doesn’t gap at the tuck or slide.
  3. The right fabric for your weather. Wind and wet matter as much as temperature.
  4. No closures to fail. Stretch instead of velcro, zippers or clasps.
  5. Harness access through a discreet opening on the back.
  6. Easy care. Washable fabric; Windblock dries in minutes.

A back-only coat can’t meet the first three. A bodysuit meets all six, which is why it is the better choice.

Hood or no hood?

Hooded bodysuits have a sewn-in hood with no strings or attachments. It covers the head, ears and neck without blocking your dog’s vision, and there is a second leash opening on the hood. Choose a hood if your Whippet faces wind on its walks, tucks its head down in the cold, or you live where snow is common. On the Extra Heavy Fleece Hooded Bodysuit, the hood rolls back into a turtleneck.
