How to Measure a Whippet for Clothes

Whippet Clothes Guide › How to Measure a Whippet for Clothes

From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: with a soft tape, measure your Whippet’s length (base of the neck, in front of the withers, to the end of the back legs), girth (the deepest part of the chest, behind the front legs) and height (floor to the top of the back near the front of the body). Then match them to the size chart below. If your dog is between sizes, write the chest size in your order comments.

What you need

A soft tape measure, your dog standing square, and a second person to help if your Whippet wriggles.

Step by step

  1. Length: start at the base of the neck, about 2 inches in front of the shoulders, and measure along the back to the back of the thigh.
  2. Girth: wrap the tape around the deepest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug but not tight.
  3. Height: measure from the floor to the top of the back, near the front of the body.
  4. Age and breed: note your dog’s age if it is under 13 months, and the breed or mix if it is not a Whippet.

2221-22"23-25.5"21-22"
2423-24"26-27"23-24"

Most Whippets have a chest 2 to 2.5 inches larger than their length. For the best sizing, put your dog’s measurements in the comments section of your order.

Between sizes?

  • Write your dog’s chest size in the order comments, or contact us first and we will help you choose.
  • A very deep-chested or very slim dog may sit outside the chart. Send us the length, girth and height and we’ll recommend a size.
  • For a mix, tell us the breeds as well as the measurements. The shape matters more than the breed name.

Why fit matters most in a bodysuit

A bodysuit that fits closely keeps warm air in at the chest and legs. That is one reason a bodysuit is the better choice than a coat for a Whippet, and why it is worth measuring carefully rather than guessing. Our bodysuits stretch, so a dog at the top or bottom of a range can still be comfortable, but the chest measurement is the one to trust.

Young dogs

If your Whippet is under 13 months, tell us the age in your order comments so we can take growth into account.

If the size isn’t right

Returns and exchanges are accepted within 14 days by mail; the customer pays return shipping, and we re-ship size exchanges of up to 2 garments free within the US. See Returns & Exchanges.
