A Dachshund Wardrobe for Every Season

The Dachshund Clothes Guide › A Dachshund Wardrobe for Every Season

From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: build a Dachshund’s wardrobe around bodysuits: a winter bodysuit matched to your coldest walks, an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit for fall, spring and the house, Jammies for sleeping, and cotton Rompers for summer, air-conditioning and travel. Sweaters, sweatshirts and shirts are nice extras on top of that.

Winter

Outside, your Dachshund needs its chest, belly and legs covered, because a long, low body is close to the snow and slush. Choose by your coldest regular walk:

All of these are for outside wear only. Take them off as soon as you come in.

Fall and spring

The Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits ($52) is made for this season. It is a soft, medium-weight fleece that resists wind and rain, great outdoors in the fall and spring and all winter in moderately cold regions. Because it can be worn inside too, it works for lounging, sleeping, walking, traveling and camping. If you like layers, a Heavy Fleece Sweater ($40) or Heavyweight Sweatshirt ($35) is a cozy extra around the house, but the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit is the one to walk in, because it covers the back legs and belly too.

Summer

Rompers ($42) are stretch cotton bodysuits for air-conditioned houses and cars, camping trips and plane rides, and sun-sensitive skin. They keep your dog dry from drizzle, are comfortable to sleep in, and can be wetted down to keep your dog cool in the sun. Lightweight Shirts ($30) are a breathable stretch cotton extra for warm days indoors.

Indoors, all year

Jammies ($45) are light, warm micro chamois fleece for lounging, sleeping under the covers or on top, and staying cozy day and night. They are machine washable and dryable, which matters for something your dog wears every night.

A simple starter wardrobe

  1. One winter bodysuit matched to your climate
  2. One Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit for in-between weather and the house
  3. One pair of Jammies for sleeping
  4. One Romper if you have hot summers, air-conditioning or travel plans

Every piece comes in the same five Dachshund sizes, XS to XL, so once you know your dog’s size it carries across the whole wardrobe. See how to measure.

Shipping a wardrobe

Orders ship within 48 hours by insured USPS Ground Advantage, and US shipping is free on orders of $125 or more. A winter bodysuit plus an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit and a pair of Jammies passes that line. NYC pick-up is also available.
