The Dachshund Clothes Guide › Gifts for Dachshund Owners, by Budget
From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.
Short answer: the gift we recommend for a Dachshund owner is a fitted bodysuit, because it covers the chest, belly and legs: a winter bodysuit for cold walks, an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit for mild days, or a pair of Jammies for bedtime. Here are our picks by budget, and how to get the size right for someone else’s dog.
Under $50: bodysuits for sleep and summer
- Rompers ($42): a stretch cotton bodysuit for air-conditioning, plane rides, camping trips and sunny days. It can be wetted down to keep a dog cool in the sun.
- Jammies ($45): light, warm micro chamois fleece for sleeping under the covers or on top. Machine washable and dryable.
$50 to $70: everyday and winter bodysuits
- Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits ($52): a medium-weight fleece that resists wind and rain, for inside and out. A safe pick for any climate.
- Heavy Fleece Bodysuits ($56–$62): thick and warm for cold, windy winter walks below 45°F.
- Extra Heavy Fleece Bodysuits ($67): a very thick velour fleece for freezing weather.
- Windblock Fleece Bodysuits ($68): wind-blocking and water-repellent, for harsh winters down to 15°F.
The big gift: $74
- Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Bodysuits ($74): a fleece so thick it feels like a jacket in the shape of a bodysuit, for the coldest weather below 25°F.
Small add-ons
If you want a little extra to go with the main gift, a Lightweight Shirt ($30), Heavyweight Sweatshirt ($35) or Heavy Fleece Sweater ($40) makes a fun layer for the house. Make the bodysuit the main present: it covers the chest, belly and legs, which a top doesn’t.
Which bodysuit for which owner?
- Lives somewhere with real winters: a Heavy Fleece or Windblock Fleece Bodysuit.
- Lives somewhere mild: an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit.
- Travels with the dog or has a cold air-conditioned home: a Romper.
- Has a dog that burrows under the covers: Jammies.
Getting the size right for someone else’s dog
- Ask the owner for the dog’s back length and chest girth (see how to measure). Knowing “Miniature” or “Standard” narrows it down: full-grown Miniatures and in-betweenies wear XS through M, Standards L and XL.
- If the dog is a puppy, note its age; Miniature puppies have their own sizes (see puppy sizing).
- Not sure? Email admin@houndzinthehood.com with what you know and we’ll help.
- If the size is wrong, we re-ship size exchanges of up to 2 garments free within the US.
