Whippet Clothes Guide › A Whippet Wardrobe for Every Season
From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.
Short answer: a Whippet needs clothes in every season, and the backbone of the wardrobe is a bodysuit for each kind of weather: a winter fleece bodysuit for walks, an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit for fall and spring, Jammies for sleeping and cotton Rompers for warm weather. Bodysuits cover the legs as well as the body, which is what keeps a Whippet comfortable.
Winter
Outside, your Whippet needs full coverage of the chest, belly and legs. Choose by your coldest regular walks:
- Heavy Fleece Bodysuits ($84) for cold, windy winter weather
- Windblock Fleece Bodysuits ($90) for wind and snow into the 20s
- Extra Heavy Fleece Hooded Bodysuits ($95) for below 35°F
- Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Hooded Bodysuits ($105) for 25°F down to 10°F
A hooded style adds a sewn-in hood that covers the head, ears and neck without blocking your dog’s vision, with a second leash opening on the hood.
Fall and spring
Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits ($70) are a midweight fleece that resists wind and rain. They are made for fall and spring in northern climates and all winter where winters are mild, and they work inside too. They are also great for travelling, hiking and camping.
Summer and warm weather
Rompers ($54) are stretch cotton bodysuits for air-conditioned houses and cars, camping trips and plane rides, sun protection and light drizzle. They can be wetted down on a hot, sunny day to help your dog stay cool.
Indoors, all year
Jammies ($56) are light, warm micro chamois fleece for lounging and sleeping, under the covers or on top.
Extras and layers
Heavyweight Sweatshirts ($40), Lightweight Shirts ($40) and Heavy Fleece Sweaters ($55) are nice extras for a chilly house or a quick trip out. They cover the chest but leave the back legs bare, so for real warmth we always point owners to a bodysuit first.
Travel and adventures
Heading out of town? The Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit is made for travelling, hiking and camping, and Rompers are made for cars, plane rides and camping trips. A Whippet that gets cold quickly will be glad of a bodysuit in a cool car or a chilly tent, so pack one that suits where you are going.
Caring for the wardrobe
Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits, Heavy Fleece Bodysuits, Jammies and Rompers are machine washable. Windblock fleece is washed in cold water and air dried, and it dries in minutes.
A simple starter wardrobe
- One winter bodysuit matched to your climate
- One Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit for in-between weather and indoors
- One pair of Jammies for sleeping, or a Romper if you live somewhere warm
Orders of $125 or more ship free in the US, which a winter bodysuit plus a second piece usually reaches.

Frequently asked questions
What clothes does a Whippet need?
Most Whippets do well with a winter fleece bodysuit for walks, an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit for fall, spring and the house, Jammies for sleeping and cotton Rompers for warm weather and air-conditioning.
Can Whippets wear clothes in summer?
Yes. Rompers are stretch cotton bodysuits for air-conditioned houses and cars, travel and sun protection, and can be wetted down to help your dog stay cool.
Is a sweatshirt or sweater enough for fall?
We recommend the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit instead. It covers all four legs, resists wind and rain, and can be worn inside and out. Sweaters and sweatshirts make good extras.
