How Cold Is Too Cold for a Dachshund?

The Dachshund Clothes Guide › How Cold Is Too Cold for a Dachshund?

From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: once it drops below about 45°F, a Dachshund on a winter walk belongs in a winter bodysuit that covers the chest, belly and legs. Below freezing, with wind and snow, choose a Windblock bodysuit; below 25°F, the Extra Heavy Windblock. In mild weather the answer is still a bodysuit: the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit.

These are the conditions each Dachshund bodysuit is made for, as described on its product page:

Mild days: still a bodysuit

For fall and spring walks, and all winter in moderately cold regions, the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits is the pick. It is a soft, medium-weight fleece that resists wind and rain, and it is the one bodysuit made to wear inside as well as out, for lounging, sleeping, walking, traveling and camping. A sweater or sweatshirt can be a fun extra layer for the house, but for going out, the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit covers the legs and belly that a sweater leaves bare.

Cold days: below 45°F

The Heavy Fleece Bodysuits is thick and warm, meant to wear outside in cold, windy winter weather and great for temperatures below 45°F. It covers the full body, including the chest and legs, and is designed for walking, running in the snow and going to the bathroom.

Freezing, windy and snowy days

  • Extra Heavy Fleece Bodysuits: a very thick velour fleece that resists the wind and repels snow, for freezing winter weather down to frigid temperatures.
  • Windblock Fleece Bodysuits: two layers of fleece with a polyurethane barrier between them that blocks wind and snow while letting moisture out. Wind-blocking and water-repellent, made for harsh winter weather down to 15°F.
  • Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Bodysuits: the same three-layer build in a fleece so thick it feels like a jacket in the shape of a bodysuit, for the coldest weather below 25°F.

What makes it feel colder for a Dachshund

  • Snow and slush. On a short-legged dog the chest and belly are close to the ground, which is why every Dachshund bodysuit covers them.
  • Wind. A windy corner feels colder than a calm street. Windblock fleece has a wind-blocking layer; Heavy Fleece and Indoor/Outdoor fleece resist wind.
  • Standing still. Waiting at a crosswalk chills a dog faster than a brisk walk.
  • Your own dog. Puppies, seniors and small Miniatures may want more cover than a fit adult Standard. Watch your dog as well as the thermometer.

Don’t overheat indoors

Heavy Fleece, Extra Heavy Fleece, Windblock and Extra Heavy Windblock should never be worn inside. When you get home, swap to Jammies for sleeping and lounging, or keep the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit on. In air-conditioning or on a hot, sunny day, choose cotton Rompers, which can even be wetted down to keep your dog cool in the sun.
