The Dachshund Clothes Guide › The Best Winter Coat for a Dachshund: How to Choose
From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.
Short answer: the best winter coat for a Dachshund is a four-leg bodysuit. Look for one that covers the chest, belly and all four legs, is cut for a long, low body with a broad chest and short legs, and is heavy enough for your coldest walks. For most cold winters, that means a Heavy Fleece or Windblock Fleece bodysuit.
What to look for
- Full coverage. The chest, belly and legs, not just the back. On a Dachshund they are the parts closest to the snow.
- A breed-specific fit. Sized by both length and chest, because Dachshund chests can be 3 to 4 inches larger than their lengths.
- The right fabric for your weather. Wind and wet matter as much as temperature.
- No closures to fail. Stretch instead of velcro, zippers or clasps.
- Harness access through an opening on the back.
- Easy care. Washable, quick-drying fabric.

Heavy Fleece, Extra Heavy or Windblock?
The Heavy Fleece Bodysuits is thick and warm, form-fitting and designed for walking, running in the snow and going to the bathroom. The Extra Heavy Fleece Bodysuits is a very thick velour fleece that resists the wind and repels snow. The Windblock Fleece Bodysuits adds a polyurethane barrier between two fleece layers to block wind and snow; it is wind-blocking and water-repellent. The Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Bodysuits uses the same build in a fleece so thick it feels like a jacket in the shape of a bodysuit. All four are for outside wear only.
Why not a regular coat?
A back-only coat leaves a Dachshund’s chest, belly and legs open, and it can slide sideways on a long, rounded body. A bodysuit covers the full body and is held in place by all four legs. Read the full comparison: bodysuit vs coat for a Dachshund.
