How Cold Is Too Cold for an Italian Greyhound?

Italian Greyhound Clothes Guide › How Cold Is Too Cold for an Italian Greyhound?

From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made clothes for Italian Greyhounds in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: many Italian Greyhounds start to feel the cold once it drops below about 45°F, and below freezing they need real winter protection that covers the chest, belly and legs. Wind, wet weather and a dog’s age or size make it feel colder, so watch your own dog as well as the thermometer.

What makes it feel colder

  • Wind. A windy 35°F day feels much colder than a calm one. Windblock fleece has a polyurethane layer between two layers of fleece to block wind and snow.
  • Rain, snow and slush. A wet dog loses heat fast. Our outer fleeces are treated to repel water.
  • Standing still. Waiting at a crosswalk or a vet’s door chills a dog faster than a brisk walk.
  • Puppies, seniors and very small Iggies usually need more warmth than a fit adult.

Don’t overheat indoors

Heavy, Extra Heavy and Windblock fleece are made for outside. Take them off when you come in. For a cool house, choose Jammies, Heavyweight Sweatshirts or Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits, which are made to be worn inside.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature is too cold for an Italian Greyhound without a coat?

Many Italian Greyhounds start to feel cold below about 45°F. Watch for shivering, lifted paws or refusing to go out, and add a layer that covers the chest and legs.

What should an Italian Greyhound wear below freezing?

Below 32°F choose a Windblock fleece bodysuit, which blocks wind and snow, or for the coldest days an Extra Heavy Windblock bodysuit, made for temperatures down to single digits.

Can my Italian Greyhound wear a winter bodysuit indoors?

No. Heavy, Extra Heavy and Windblock fleece are for outside wear only. Indoors, choose jammies, a sweatshirt, a shirt or an Indoor/Outdoor bodysuit.
