How Cold Is Too Cold for a Miniature Dog?

The Miniature Dog Clothes Guide › How Cold Is Too Cold for a Miniature Dog?

From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: once the weather turns chilly, a Miniature dog needs a bodysuit outside, and the colder, windier and wetter it gets, the heavier that bodysuit should be. Choose by your coldest regular walk, and watch your own dog as well as the thermometer.

How to read the table

What makes it feel colder

  • Wind. Windblock fleece has a polyurethane barrier between two fleece layers to block wind and snow. Our other fleeces resist wind.
  • Rain, snow and slush. The outer Windblock fleece is treated to be water-repellent.
  • Standing still. Waiting at a crosswalk chills a small dog faster than a brisk walk.
  • Your own dog. If your Miniature shivers, lifts its paws or won’t go out, step up to the next bodysuit in the table.

Why a bodysuit at every temperature

At every step in the table, the recommendation is a bodysuit, because it covers the chest, belly and all four legs. A sweater or sweatshirt can be a nice extra layer around the house, but outside, the bodysuit is the better choice.

Don’t overheat indoors

Heavy Fleece, Windblock and the Extra Heavy styles are made for outside. Windblock fleece should never be worn inside. When you come in, switch to Jammies ($40) or keep on an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit ($45), which is made to be worn in the house too. For air-conditioning or a warm car, Rompers ($38) are a stretch cotton bodysuit.
