The Miniature Dog Clothes Guide › Do Miniature Dogs Need Clothes in Winter?
From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.
Short answer: yes, in cold weather most Miniature dogs are more comfortable in clothes, and a four-leg bodysuit is the better choice. A Miniature Pinscher, Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier or Miniature Poodle weighs only about 6 to 11 pounds, and a bodysuit covers the chest, belly and all four legs instead of just the back.
Which dogs this guide is for
Our Miniature Clothing Line is sized and shaped for Miniature breeds such as Miniature Pinschers, Chihuahuas, Yorkshire Terriers and Miniature Poodles, and for mixes with a similar build. If your dog is roughly 11 to 12 inches long from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, with a chest of 13 to 17 inches, these clothes were made with your dog in mind.
Signs your Miniature is cold
- Shivering or trembling outside, even on short walks
- Not wanting to go out, or rushing back to the door
- Lifting paws or hunching up on cold ground
- Burrowing under blankets at home
When you see these signs, the answer is more coverage, not just a thicker layer on the back.
Why a bodysuit, not a coat or sweater
A coat or sweater leaves the belly and back legs open to wind, rain and snow. Our Miniature Bodysuits cover the chest, belly and all four legs. They stretch to go on, so there are no zippers, velcro or clasps, and they have a discreet opening on the back for a leash or harness. They are cut to allow all bodily functions and are machine washable.
Because the legs hold the suit in place, a bodysuit stays put while your dog walks, runs in the snow or goes to the bathroom. That is something a coat that only covers the back can’t do.
Match the bodysuit to your weather
- Mild days, fall and spring: Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits ($45), a midweight fleece that resists wind and rain and can be worn inside too.
- Cold, windy winter walks: Heavy Fleece Bodysuits ($50), thick fleece that resists wind, rain and snow.
- Harsh winters with wind and snow: Windblock Fleece Bodysuits ($60), three layers, wind-blocking and water-repellent, keeps your dog warm into the 20s°F.
- The coldest weather, down to single digits: Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Bodysuit ($62).
Hooded versions add a sewn-in hood that covers the head, ears and neck, with a second leash opening on the hood.
What about indoors?
For a cool house or for sleeping, Jammies ($40) are a stretch micro chamois fleece bodysuit made for lounging day and night. For air-conditioning, travel and sun, Rompers ($38) are a stretch cotton bodysuit. Winter fleece bodysuits are for outside only, so take them off when you come in.

Frequently asked questions
Do Chihuahuas and Miniature Pinschers need clothes in winter?
In cold weather most are more comfortable in clothes. Dogs in the Miniature line weigh about 6 to 11 pounds, and a four-leg bodysuit covers the chest, belly and legs, which a coat or sweater leaves open.
Is a bodysuit better than a coat for a small dog?
Yes. A bodysuit covers the chest, belly and all four legs and the legs keep it in place, while a coat covers mostly the back.
Can my Miniature wear clothes indoors?
Yes, in the right fabric. Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits, Jammies and cotton Rompers can be worn inside. Heavy Fleece, Windblock and Extra Heavy bodysuits are for outside.
