The Miniature Dog Clothes Guide › Bodysuit vs Coat: Which Is Better for a Miniature Dog?
From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.
Short answer: a bodysuit is the better choice. It covers the chest, belly and all four legs, the legs hold it in place, and ours have no zippers, velcro or clasps. A coat covers mostly the back and leaves the belly and legs open to wind, rain and snow.
Side by side
| Houndz Miniature Bodysuit | Back-only coat | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Chest, belly and all four legs; hooded styles add head, ears and neck | Back and sides; belly and legs often bare |
| Stays in place | Yes, the legs hold it on through walking, running in the snow and bathroom breaks | Can twist or slide on a small dog |
| Closures | None: it stretches to go on | Usually velcro, buckles or zippers |
| Leash and harness | Discreet opening on the back; hooded styles add one on the hood | Varies |
| Bathroom | Cut to allow all bodily functions | Not an issue |
| Fit | Sized and shaped for Miniature breeds by length and chest | Often sized by back length only |
| Care | Machine washable | Varies |
Why the bodysuit wins
- Full coverage. The belly and back legs are close to cold ground, wet grass and snow. A bodysuit covers them; a coat doesn’t.
- It stays put. On an active Miniature Pinscher or a busy Yorkie, a coat can shift. A bodysuit moves with the dog.
- Nothing to come undone. No velcro to catch fur, no zipper to rub.
- A fabric for every weather. From mild fall days to single digits, there is a Miniature bodysuit made for it.
Which bodysuit replaces which coat
| If you were looking at | Choose this bodysuit instead | Price |
|---|---|---|
| A light jacket for fall and spring | Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits | $45 |
| A fleece winter coat | Heavy Fleece Bodysuits | $50 |
| A coat for wind and snow | Windblock Fleece Bodysuits or with a hood | $60 / $60 |
| A parka for the harshest weather | Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Bodysuit or with a hood | $62 / $66 |
What about mild days?
On mild days, choose the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit. Its midweight fleece resists wind and rain and is comfortable inside too, so there is no need to swap garments at the door. An Embroidered Fleece Sweater or a Heavyweight Sweatshirt can be a fun extra layer, but for time outside the bodysuit is the better choice.
Fit and sizing
Every Miniature bodysuit comes in size 12, for dogs about 11 to 12 inches long with a chest of 13 to 17 inches and a weight of 6 to 11 pounds. Because a bodysuit is sized by both length and chest, it follows your dog’s shape instead of sitting on top of it. If your dog is between sizes, write the chest size in your order comments and we’ll help.
Isn’t a bodysuit harder to put on?
It takes a little practice at first. See how to put on a Miniature bodysuit for the step-by-step.

A bodysuit. It covers the chest, belly and all four legs, stays in place because of the legs, and has no zippers, velcro or clasps. A coat covers mostly the back.

Yes. Miniature bodysuits have a discreet opening on the back for a leash or harness, and hooded styles add a second opening on the hood.
Can my dog go to the bathroom in a bodysuit?
