The Miniature Dog Clothes Guide › A Miniature Dog Wardrobe for Every Season
From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.
Short answer: build your Miniature’s wardrobe around bodysuits: a winter fleece bodysuit for cold walks, an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit for mild weather, Jammies for sleeping and cotton Rompers for heat, sun and travel. Sweaters, sweatshirts and shirts are fun extras on top of that.
Winter
Outside, your dog needs the chest, belly and legs covered. Choose by your coldest days:
- Heavy Fleece Bodysuits ($50) for cold, windy winter weather
- Windblock Fleece Bodysuits ($60) for wind and snow, into the 20s°F
- Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Bodysuit ($62) or Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Hooded Bodysuit ($66) for the harshest weather
Hooded styles have a sewn-in hood with no strings or attachments that covers the head, ears and neck without blocking your dog’s vision, plus a second leash opening on the hood.
Fall and spring
Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits ($45) are a midweight fleece that resists wind and rain. They are made for fall and spring in northern climates and all winter in mildly cold regions, and they work for travelling, hiking and camping too. This is the bodysuit for mild weather.
Summer
Rompers ($38) are a stretchy cotton bodysuit for air-conditioned houses and cars, camping trips, plane rides and sun. They keep your dog dry in a drizzle, and you can wet them down to help keep your dog cool in the sun.
Indoors, all year
Jammies ($40) are a micro chamois fleece bodysuit, light and warm, for lounging and sleeping under the covers or on top. An Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit also works in a cool house.
Extras for layering and fun
These are nice to have once the bodysuits are covered:
- Embroidered Fleece Sweaters ($30): soft, thick fleece with a turtleneck that covers the chest and front legs. It won’t itch.
- Heavyweight Sweatshirts ($28): heavy fleeced cotton for a chilly house or a transitional day.
- Lightweight Shirts ($27): breathable stretch cotton for everyday wear.
For warmth outside, a bodysuit is still the better choice, because it covers the belly and back legs too.
A simple starter wardrobe
- One winter bodysuit matched to your climate
- One Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit for mild weather and the house
- One pair of Jammies for sleeping
- One pair of Rompers for summer, travel and air-conditioning
Caring for the wardrobe
Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits, Jammies, Rompers and Heavy Fleece Bodysuits are machine washable. Windblock and Extra Heavy Windblock should be washed in cold water and air dried, and they dry in minutes. Every piece comes in Miniature size 12, so one set of measurements covers the whole wardrobe.
US shipping is free on orders of $125 or more. A Windblock Fleece Bodysuit plus an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit and a pair of Jammies comes to $145.

A winter fleece bodysuit for cold walks, an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit for mild weather, Jammies for sleeping and cotton Rompers for heat, sun and travel. Sweaters, sweatshirts and shirts are extras.
Can Miniature dogs wear clothes in summer?
Yes. Cotton Rompers are made for air-conditioned houses and cars, plane rides and sun, and can be wetted down to help keep your dog cool.
Can my Chihuahua just wear a sweater in winter?
For winter walks a bodysuit is the better choice, because it covers the belly and back legs as well as the chest. A sweater makes a nice extra layer at home.
