Whippet Clothes Guide › How to Put On (and Take Off) a Whippet Bodysuit
From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.
Short answer: gather the suit and pull it over your Whippet’s head like a turtleneck, tuck the front legs into the leggings, slide the suit back, then put in each back leg. To take it off, reverse it: back legs first, then front legs and head.
Before you start
Our Whippet bodysuits stretch for easy on and off, with no velcro, zippers or clasps. That makes them comfortable to wear, but the first few times you dress your dog, give yourself a calm minute. A Whippet’s long legs can feel awkward to guide into leggings until you have a routine.
Putting it on
- Harness first. If your dog wears a harness, put it on before the suit.
- Over the head. Gather the suit and pull it over your dog’s head, like putting on a turtleneck.
- Front legs. Tuck each front leg into its legging, then pull the suit back along the body.
- Back legs. Bend each back leg gently and guide it into its legging.
- Smooth and check. The suit should lie smooth along the back, chest and legs. Bring the harness ring through the discreet opening on the back.
Hooded bodysuits
Hooded styles have a sewn-in hood with no strings or attachments. Pull it up over the head and ears once the suit is on; it covers the head, ears and neck without blocking your dog’s vision. There is a second leash opening on the hood. On the Extra Heavy Fleece Hooded Bodysuit, the hood rolls back into a turtleneck when you don’t need it.
Taking it off
- Sit or stand your dog with its back against you.
- Keep the back legs bent while you slide the back leggings off.
- Once the back legs are out, pull the suit off the front legs and over the head, like pulling off a turtleneck.
Why a bodysuit is worth the extra minute
A coat is quicker to put on, but it leaves a Whippet’s chest, belly and legs bare. The bodysuit covers all of it, stays in place when your dog runs, and is cut to allow all bodily functions, so there is no need to take it off for bathroom breaks. That is why it is the better choice for a Whippet in every season.
