How Cold Is Too Cold for a Teacup or Toy Dog?

The Toy & Teacup Dog Clothes Guide › How Cold Is Too Cold for a Teacup or Toy Dog?

From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: if your Teacup or Toy dog is shivering, it is too cold for what it is wearing. Watch your own dog and match the bodysuit to your weather: an Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit for chilly fall and spring days, fleece for winter, and Windblock for wind, snow and below-freezing walks.

The Windblock Hooded and both Extra Heavy Windblock styles come in size 10 (Toy). For a size 8 Teacup, the warmest choices are Extra Heavy Fleece Bodysuits and Extra Heavy Fleece Hooded Bodysuits, which is made for weather below 35°F.

What makes it feel colder

  • Wind. Windblock fleece has a polyurethane layer between two fleeces to block wind and snow while letting moisture through.
  • Rain and snow. The outer Windblock fleece is water-repellent, and the Extra Heavy fleece repels snow.
  • Standing still. Waiting at a crosswalk chills a dog faster than walking.
  • Head and ears. Hooded styles cover the head, ears and neck for icy days.

Don’t overheat indoors

Heavy Fleece, Extra Heavy and Windblock bodysuits are made for outside. Take them off when you come in. Indoors, the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits keeps your dog covered, and Jammies are made for lounging and sleeping. In air-conditioning, choose Rompers, our stretch cotton bodysuits.

Teacup or Toy: what changes

A size 10 Toy dog can wear every bodysuit in the table. A size 8 Teacup can wear all of them except the Windblock Hooded and the two Extra Heavy Windblock styles, so for a Teacup in a hard winter, the Windblock Fleece Bodysuit and the Extra Heavy Fleece Hooded Bodysuit are the ones to know.
