The Best Winter Coat for a Teacup or Toy Dog: How to Choose

The Toy & Teacup Dog Clothes Guide › The Best Winter Coat for a Teacup or Toy Dog: How to Choose

From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: the best winter coat for a Teacup or Toy dog is a four-leg bodysuit, not a coat. It covers the chest, belly and all four legs, is cut for the tiniest breeds, and comes in a weight for your coldest walks. For most cold winters that means Heavy Fleece or Windblock.

What to look for

  1. Full coverage. Chest, belly and legs, not just the back.
  2. A true tiny-dog fit. Sized by length, chest and weight for dogs of 3 to 8 pounds, so it doesn’t gap or slide.
  3. The right fabric for your weather. Wind and wet matter as much as temperature.
  4. No closures. Stretch instead of zippers, velcro or clasps.
  5. Leash access through an opening on the back.
  6. Easy care. Washable, quick-drying fabric.

Hood or no hood?

If your dog tucks its head down in the wind or you walk on icy, snowy days, choose a hooded style. Hoods cover the head, ears and neck, are sewn in without strings, and do not interfere with your dog’s vision.

One rule for every winter bodysuit

Heavy Fleece, Extra Heavy and Windblock bodysuits are for outside wear. Take them off when you come in, and switch to the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits or Jammies indoors.
