The Toy & Teacup Dog Clothes Guide › Do Teacup and Toy Dogs Need Coats?
From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.
Short answer: yes, most do. A Teacup or Toy dog weighs only 3 to 8 pounds, so in cool, windy or wet weather it needs a layer, and the layer that works best is a four-leg bodysuit that covers the chest, belly and legs, not just the back.
Who we mean by Teacup and Toy
Our Toy & Teacup line is shaped and sized for the tiniest breeds. It fits Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, Mi-Kis, Maltese, Bichon Frise, Poodles, Fox Terriers and many others. Size 8 (Teacup) is for dogs of 3 to 5 pounds and size 10 (Toy) for dogs of 6 to 8 pounds. Teacups need the smallest size available, and ours are designed exactly for their length and shape.
Signs your tiny dog is cold
- Shivering or trembling on walks
- Refusing to go out, or rushing back to the door
- Lifting paws or hunching up
- Burrowing under blankets indoors
If you see these signs, your dog needs more coverage, not just a thicker layer on the back.
Why a bodysuit and not a coat
A coat that sits on the back leaves the chest, belly and legs bare. Our Bodysuits cover the chest, belly and all four legs. They stretch for easy on and off with no zippers, velcro or clasps, have a discreet leash or harness opening on the back, and are cut to allow all bodily functions. That is why a bodysuit is always our recommendation for a tiny dog, whatever the season.
Match the bodysuit to the weather
- Chilly fall and spring days, or all winter in mildly cold regions: Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits ($40), which can be worn inside too.
- Cold, windy winter walks: Heavy Fleece Bodysuits ($45).
- Wind and snow, into the 20s: Windblock Fleece Bodysuits ($52).
- The coldest weather, down to single digits: Extra Heavy Windblock Fleece Bodysuit ($56, size 10).

What about indoors?
A cool house or air-conditioning can chill a tiny dog too. Indoors, choose a bodysuit made for inside: the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits for a cool house and lounging, Jammies ($34) for sleeping, and Rompers ($32), our stretch cotton bodysuits, for air-conditioned rooms and cars. Heavy Fleece, Extra Heavy and Windblock bodysuits are for outside only.
How the Toy & Teacup line is made
Since 1999, every Houndz in the Hood pattern has been sized and shaped to the breed, the way a dressmaker fits a client. Each Toy & Teacup garment is made in the USA, sewn in New York City’s garment district and checked by hand before it ships, and every bodysuit is machine washable.
