The Best Winter Coat for a Pug, French Bulldog or Boston Terrier

Pug, French Bulldog and Boston Terrier Clothes Guide › The Best Winter Coat for a Pug, French Bulldog or Boston Terrier

From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: the best winter “coat” for a Pug, French Bulldog or Boston Terrier is a four-leg bodysuit cut for the breed. For cold, windy winters, that is our Heavy Fleece Bodysuit ($60); for mildly cold regions, the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit ($52).

What to look for

  1. Full coverage. The chest, belly and all four legs, not just the back.
  2. A breed-specific fit. These dogs have a chest several inches larger than their back length, so the garment must be sized by both.
  3. The right fabric for your weather. Wind, rain and snow matter as much as the cold.
  4. No closures to fail. Stretch instead of velcro, zippers or clasps.
  5. Harness access through an opening on the back.
  6. Easy care. Machine washable.

Why the Heavy Fleece Bodysuit for real winters

  • Thick, warm fleece to wear outside in cold, windy winter weather
  • Resists wind, repels rain and snow, and insulates the body
  • Covers the whole body, including the chest and legs
  • Designed for walking, running in the snow and going to the bathroom
  • Stretches sideways for dogs of different weights; no velcro, zippers or clasps
  • Discreet leash opening on the back; fully machine washable

It is for outside wear only. Take it off when you come in.

Why not a coat or sweater?

A back-only coat leaves the chest, belly and legs bare and has little to hold it in place on a wide chest. A sweater covers the chest and front legs only. A bodysuit is the better choice. See bodysuit vs coat.
