Pug, French Bulldog and Boston Terrier Clothes Guide › How to Measure a Pug, French Bulldog or Boston Terrier for Clothes
From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.
Short answer: with a soft tape, measure your dog’s length (base of the neck, in front of the withers, to the base of the tail) and girth (the deepest, largest part of the chest, just behind the front legs). Then match both to the size chart below.
What you need
A soft tape measure, your dog standing square, and a second person to help if your dog wriggles. Always use a soft tape for both length and girth.
Step by step
- Length: start at the base of the neck, about 1 inch in front of the shoulders (in front of the withers), and measure along the back to the base of the tail.
- Girth: circle the tape around the deepest part of the chest, the largest chest circumference just behind the front legs. Keep it snug but not tight.
- Age: note it. Let us know if your dog is under 13 months.
- Breed: note your dog’s breed, or the breeds in a mix.
For the best sizing, put all four in the comments section of your order.
Pug, Boston Terrier and French Bulldog size chart
| Size | Length | Girth (chest) |
|---|---|---|
| PS | 13-15" | 19-21" |
| PM/PL | 14-16" | 22-24" |
| PL/PXL | 16-17" | 24-27" |
Notice that the chest is several inches larger than the length in every size. That is normal for these breeds and is why this line is cut differently from our others.
Between sizes?
The sizes overlap a little (for example, a 24 inch chest sits at the top of PM/PL and the bottom of PL/PXL). If your dog is between sizes, or very large or small chested:
- Write the chest size in the comments section of your order and we will help you figure out the right size.
- Or contact us or email admin@houndzinthehood.com with the length, girth, age and breed before you order.
- For a mix, send the measurements and the breeds. The shape matters more than the breed name.
Young dogs
If your dog is under 13 months, tell us the age when you order so we can take it into account. Measure again before each new purchase while your dog is growing.
Why a snug fit matters
Our bodysuits stretch to go on and have no velcro, zippers or clasps, so the fit comes from choosing the right size. A suit that is too big can sag and twist; one that fits lies smooth along the back and chest and stays in place on walks.
If the size isn’t right
Returns and exchanges are accepted within 14 days by mail, with the buyer paying return shipping, and we re-ship size exchanges of up to 2 garments free in the US. See Returns & Exchanges.
