The Dog Bodysuit Guide › Dog Clothes for Travel, Air-Conditioning and Sun
From Houndz in the Hood, based on the fitting notes of founder Terri Goodwillie, who has made breed-fitted dog clothes in New York City since 1999. Updated October 2026.
Short answer: choose a Romper, our stretch cotton bodysuit. Rompers are made for air-conditioned houses and cars, camping trips and plane rides, and sunny days, and they can be wetted down to help your dog stay cool in the sun. For cooler trips, the midweight Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit is made for travel too.
What a Romper is
A Romper is a full bodysuit in stretchy cotton. Like our fleece bodysuits, it stretches to go on, has no velcro, zippers or clasps, and has a discreet leash opening on the back. It is machine washable in cool water and dries in low heat.
When to use a Romper
- Air-conditioning. Our product pages list air-conditioned houses and cars first among the Romper’s uses. It gives cover without the weight of fleece.
- Plane rides and road trips. Our product pages list camping trips and plane rides among the Romper’s uses.
- Sun. Rompers cover the skin on sunny days. Made of stretchy cotton, they can be wetted down to help keep your dog cool outside.
- Cool days and drizzle. Rompers give some warmth on cool days and keep a dog dry from drizzle.
- Agility practice and warm-ups, and sleeping: they are comfortable to sleep in.
Why a Romper rather than a shirt?
We also make Lightweight Shirts in breathable stretch cotton, and they work well as an extra layer. But the Romper is the full-suit version, so it covers more of your dog, and it is the one we recommend for travel, air-conditioning and sun.
Rompers by breed line

The Pug, Boston Terrier & French Bulldog line does not have Rompers at the moment. For travel, its Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit ($52) is a midweight fleece made for travelling, hiking and camping, and for lounging and sleeping indoors.
Cooler trips: the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit
For a trip in fall or spring, or somewhere with cool evenings, the Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuit is a midweight fleece that resists wind and rain and can be worn inside and out. Our product pages call it great for travelling, hiking and camping. Example: Toy & Teacup Indoor/Outdoor Bodysuits ($40).
